our history

The story we began is still being written

At Weitz, history is built one defining moment at a time. What began with a few small carpentry projects grew into a vision that became our foundation of innovation, resilience, and leadership. Our story continues not only in the structures we build, but also in the lasting impact of what we create. We remain committed to investing in our greatest resource: you.

1855

Charles H. Weitz opened a modest carpentry shop in Des Moines, Iowa, earning his first job installing windows at the Savery House, now the Savery Hotel. He grew his business by building shops, private homes, commercial buildings, and churches.

1920s–1940s

After completing the elegant new Hotel Fort Des Moines, a $1.2 million project and the most expensive hotel in Iowa, Weitz turned to federally funded highway and post office projects to navigate the Great Depression. When commercial construction returned to Des Moines, Weitz reaffirmed its leadership in the field.

1970s and 1980s

Prompted by success in the senior living market, Weitz quickly expanded nationwide, opening several offices across the country.

2012

In December 2012, Weitz became part of global engineering and construction leader Orascom Construction PLC, opening the door to greater growth and new opportunities.

TODAY

We are celebrating 170 years of Building a Better Way. Through our four key product lines: Aviation, Commercial, Industrial, and Mission Critical, Weitz delivers innovative construction solutions across the nation. Safety, quality, and customer advocacy are the cornerstone of everything we do. We remain committed to growing and shaping the future of construction.
